Claims that Twitter has announced that they plan to remove Donald Trump’s Twitter account “within 24 hours” are spreading on social media. The story purports that Twitter claimed Trump’s tweets were “racist” and contained “divisive rhetoric”. The links lead back to an article published on CNN.com.de that reads in part –
Twitter announced today that it will delete Donald Trump’s account sometime within the next 48 hours because of what the company calls “Trump’s racist and divisive rhetoric”.
“Twitter will not tolerate active users, whose only message is one of hate, racism and intolerance. Donald Trump may have been elected to the White House, but at least someone can stand up to him, for the American people and say, ‘No Mr. Trump, we are not with you,’” Paul Horner, a spokesman for Twitter told reporters.
The story is not true. This is just another fake news article from a website posing as a legitimate media outlet. The domain CNN.com.de is not associated with the CNN media brand. The site contained other blatantly fake news articles including the assertion that Trump announced “the Earth is flat” and that “Obama has banned the National Anthem as sporting events”.
Ironically the site also contained an article called “How To Educate Yourself Before You Just Share Articles On Facebook Like A F*ckin’ Doof”. This is just another one of dozens of fake news websites owned by serial Internet prankster Paul Horner, who has over the last handful of years operated a number of popular fake news websites that have collectively fooled millions of Internet users.
Twitter has not made any statement or announcement purporting that Trump has been banned, and since this story has been spreading for over a week and Trump is still tweeting from the service, the story is demonstrably fake.
Thus, the claim that Twitter has (or will) removed Trump from their service is simply a fake news item and should not be circulated as legitimate news.
