Rumours that Queen Elizabeth has decided to abdicate the throne and pass it on to Prince William are spreading online. The rumours source back to an article on a website 1ndependent.co.uk which claims the queen has managed to persuade Prince Charles to abdicate to William to keep the Royal Family “relevant and vital”. That article reads in part –
It has been confirmed Britain’s Queen Elizabeth is set to retire on February 06, 2017 exactly her 65th anniversary since she ascended the throne and has chosen to pass the crown over to Prince William.
She is the longest reigning monarch in the UK giving up the throne in favour of her grandson, Prince William, bypassing her eldest son and heir apparent, Prince Charles.
However, the rumours are false. No legitimate news outlets are reporting on this story, nor is anyone claiming that the Queen has ever considered abdication, or indeed that Prince Charles has ever agreed to abdicate in favour of his own son eldest son, Prince William.
The site that published the article – 1ndependent.co.uk – it not a real news site. While it may appear upon a cursory glance to be the Independent.co.uk website (note the I and not 1 at the start of each) the pair are completely unrelated.
1ndependent.co.uk has a disclaimer link at the bottom of each page that leads to their disclaimer that reads in part –
Da1lyPost is a news and political satire web publication, comprised of individual posts, some taken from or inspired by real news events but the stories are almost entirely works of complete fiction.
Given the name of the website appears different, it would suggest the disclaimer has just been copied and pasted from another fake news website owned by the same people.
The story is fake and should not be circulated as true.
